ISSUE OF A TAX CODE
-
CERTIFICATION OF AN EXISTING TAX CODE
The codice fiscale is essential for carrying out financial transactions in Italy: real estate transactions, inheritance, employment, opening a bank account or enrolling at university. It is also issued to those who are not Italian citizens.
The service is free of charge and is reserved for private citizens over the age of 18, exclusively resident in this consular district (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Union Territory of Puducherry).
Companies or Corporations must apply for a Codice Fiscale in Italy to the relevant Revenue Office in the place of registration/head office of the Company/Corporation in Italy.
Applications for minors, or on behalf of a third party, or by the heir for a deceased family member, must contain additional documents.
Individuals can apply for an Italian tax code (for a first issuance), or for a certification of an existing one (e.g. to access services related to digital identity SPID – reserved to Italian citizens), only through the online form.
-
- How to apply
The citizen (either Italian or foreigner) who needs to obtain the tax code can submit the request to this Consulate General via email, writing to bangalore.consolare@esteri.it, submitting the following documents:
-
- application form;
- copy of passport or other valid identity document showing photo and personal data (driving license is not accepted);
- proof of residence in the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Italy in Bengaluru (last page of passport for Indian citizens; gas/electricity/phone for Italian citizens).
The application must be completed in full, paying attention to applicant’s details and recording them exactly as they appear on the identity document.
Italian citizens must indicate their name as it appears on the Italian document, even if they hold another nationality. The address in Italy may be limited to the AIRE reference municipality in Italy.
Those requesting certification of a pre-existing tax code MUST specify which service they require and, if they know it, enter the tax code in the ‘notes’ in the online request.
ATTENTION: The tax code is issued on the basis of personal data: name, surname, date and place of birth. In the case of persons already known to the Italian Public Administration, these data must comply with the data already held by the Italian Administration.
The applicants who belong to the following categories MUST inform the Consulate whilst submitting the application:
– Italians who have changed their surname following marriage;
– descendants of Italian citizens holding another citizenship;
– spouses of citizens who are also Italian citizens.
-
- Application for minors: in case of minors, it will be necessary to send not only the minor’s identity document, but also the applicant adult’s identity document and the digital copy (in .pdf format) of the birth certificate or other document (showing the parents’ names) proving that the applicant has the right to act on behalf of the minor. In this case the proof of residence must be in the name of the parent.
-
- Application by an heir for a deceased person: in addition to the identity document of the deceased, the identity document of the applicant/heir and the digital copy (in .pdf format) of the death certificate must also be submitted. In this case the proof of residence must be in the name of the applicant.
-
- Application by students :
The Fiscal Code is automatically generated on the UNIVERSITALY Portal during the pre-enrolment application.
The Consulate General of Italy in Bengaluru will therefore not issue any Fiscal Code as part of the pre-enrolment process through the UNIVERSITALY Portal.
The attribution of the Tax Code can be completed: by non-EU students at the Single Immigration Desk (Sportello Unico dell’Immigrazione) or at the Police Headquarters (Questura) at the time of applying for the residence permit; by EU students at the Italian Revenue Agency by submitting the AA4/8 form.
- Application by students :
Please note that the Consulate General of Italy in Bengaluru will issue the Fiscal Codes only in cases of proven urgency and when they are strictly necessary for the completion of administrative procedures prior to departure (upon explicit request of the University), and anyhow only after the visa has already been issued.

- Conclusion of the Procedure
The certification is sent by e-mail, in .pdf format file. The Agenzia delle Entrate no longer issues plastic cards.
The tax code does not expire and does not change due to transfer abroad.
This office does not have the possibility to change a tax code as a result of an error or change of name: it is necessary to apply to the Agenzia delle Entrate office in Italy.

ATTENTION: The CODICE FISCALE appears on the TESSERA SANITARIA, which has an expiry date and is linked to residence in Italy. Those who reside abroad are not entitled to the TESSERA SANITARIA.
