The Consulate General of Italy in Bengaluru, in collaboration with the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Bengaluru, inaugurated One Mother, Many Mother Tongues on 20 August 2026.
Curated by Naman P. Ahuja and Andrea Anastasio, the exhibition brings together works from India and Italy exploring representations of motherhood across different cultures and periods.
Among the highlights is Sandro Botticelli’s Madonna and Child, painted around 1490, presented alongside earlier representations of motherhood from Italy and India, including Mater Matuta, Hariti, Skandamata and Chamunda. The works offer different perspectives on how motherhood has been represented across time and cultural traditions.
The inauguration was attended by the Hon’ble Minister for Energy and Tourism, Government of Karnataka, Shri K. J. George; the Consul General of Italy in Bengaluru, Giandomenico Milano; the Director of the National Gallery of Modern Art, Bengaluru, Priyanka Mary Francis, IAS; and the Managing Director of Prestige Group, Dr. Rezwan Razack.
An education and community programme is running alongside the exhibition, with guided visits and creative workshops involving schools, colleges, universities, community centres and shelter homes across Bengaluru.
One Mother, Many Mother Tongues is open to the public at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Bengaluru, until 20 September 2026.
